Camper & Nicholsons is one of the most established brokerage firms with a unique history in the yachting world. This history, which started with the first shipyard established by Francis Amos in Gosport in 1782, has turned into a legacy that has lasted for centuries.
Beginnings
In 1782 Francis Amos established a shipyard at Gosport opposite the Royal Naval Dockyard Portsmouth. This was his first foray into the yachting industry and was further developed when Francis Amos met his great-nephew, William Camper. In 1821 the shipyard began building small merchant ships, and Camper built solid relationships with wealthy clients, turning the business into a force in the yacht building industry.
Camper and Nicholson
In 1863, Camper & Nicholsons was formed as a company controlled by Ben Nicholson, after William Camper retired and was financed by the Lapthorn family. Ben Nicholson distinguished himself in the design and construction of large sailboats, expanding the Gosport facilities and adding repair and maintenance services.

When Ben Nicholson’s three sons joined the company, the company name changed to Camper & Nicholsons. These sons, each an expert in their own field, made significant contributions to the success of the company. Charles Ernest Nicholson attracted attention with his mastery of design and designed many award-winning yachts around the world.
Post-World War II “Golden Age”
Before and after the Second World War, Camper & Nicholsons maintained a leading position in the yachting industry, including motor yachts. The large motor yachts produced by the company have become known worldwide and won the admiration of customers.
